Early in the morning, the hills of the Lake District were wrapped in a thin blanket of mist. The narrow trail wound its way up the hillside, twisting between rocks, streams and patches of bright green grass.
Ella tightened the laces on her running shoes and took a deep breath of the cool mountain air. Trail running was very different from running on a flat track. The ground was uneven, sometimes muddy, and the path often climbed steeply before dipping down again.
As she ran, Ella could hear the steady crunch of gravel beneath her feet and the distant call of birds echoing across the valley. The climb was challenging, and her legs began to ache, but when she reached the top of the hill she paused for a moment.
Below her, the silver surface of the lake stretched across the valley, reflecting the pale morning sky. The long run had been difficult, but standing there above the water, Ella felt it had been completely worth it.
R - What covered the hills early in the morning?
I - Why might Ella pause when she reaches the top of the hill? Use evidence from the text.
C - The writer describes the trail as “twisting between rocks, streams and patches of bright green grass.”
What does the word “twisting” suggest about the path?
