Year 1L

Year 1 is an exciting year of learning, growing and discovering new things. Our children are encouraged to be curious, confident and independent as they develop their skills across the curriculum.
We place a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning, giving children opportunities to explore, investigate, create and learn through real experiences. Through engaging lessons, creative activities and purposeful play, we help every child build a strong foundation for their learning journey while developing a love of learning.
This page will be updated regularly with photographs and examples of the children’s learning, so you can see what we have been getting up to in Year 1!
We are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead, filled with exciting learning opportunities, new experiences and lots of happy memories.

Autumn 1
This half term, we will be listening to and joining in with lots of poems and songs to help us identify rhyming words. We will explore the story Harry the Happy Mouse, using it to develop our speaking, listening and writing skills and inspire our own ideas. We will also enjoy the familiar rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock, joining in with the repeated phrases and exploring the rhyming words within the rhyme.

As Scientist, we will be exploring our bodies and learning to name different parts, including those we can see and some that we cannot. We will discover our five senses – sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch – and learn how they help us understand the world around us. We will also use our senses to carry out an exciting hands-on investigation, making observations and sharing what we discover.

As Theologians, we will be exploring the importance of keeping promises and what it means to have trust and faith in God. We will learn how Jewish people express their trust in God through a range of stories, traditions and celebrations, including the festival of Sukkot. Through discussion and practical activities, we will develop our understanding of how faith is expressed in everyday life and special celebrations.

As Geographers, we will be exploring how the weather changes throughout the seasons and across different times of the day. We will become weather investigators, observing and recording changes in the weather and creating our own weather instruments to help us measure different conditions. We will also investigate how weather can sometimes be dangerous and learn about the ways we can keep ourselves safe.
