Year 6G

Welcome to Year 6! We are very excited for an important and memorable year together. Throughout the year, we will work hard in all areas of the curriculum, building on the skills the children have developed so far and encouraging them to reach their full potential.

This year will be packed with a wide range of learning experiences designed to inspire curiosity and enjoyment. From creative classroom projects to practical problem-solving activities, every child will have the chance to thrive. We are also looking forward to trips and visits that will help bring our learning to life and provide wonderful memories for the children.

Please revisit this page regularly to see the amazing things the children will achieve this year. With hard work, teamwork, and enthusiasm, we are sure it will be a fantastic journey for everyone in Year 6!

In Maths, we will begin the year learning about the place value of numbers to ten million, we will compare, order and round them with different levels of accuracy. Later in the term, we will move on to four operations on whole numbers where we will study mixed operations and practise formal written methods for multiplication and division.

The children in Year 6 have been finding common factors.

Factors

In English, we will be basing our writing around our class novel, The Nowhere Emporium. Whilst we immerse ourselves in the book, we will follow the writing sequence by responding to the text, gathering content, drafting and writing.

In Autumn 1, we will be furthering our understanding about light and shadows. We will learn about light and how it travels, why shadows are the same shape as the object that casts them and how we see things.

The pupils in 6G have been thinking about how we see things and have made predictions using labelled diagrams.

We carried out an experiment to demonstrate that light travels in straight lines.

In Geography, we will be learning about Earth’s biomes. We will study world maps to identify where these vast areas of the Earth are in relation to the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The children will also carry out a research project, where they will find information using their iPads about their chosen biome. They will then use their iPads to create a presentation. Keep an eye out for those!

In RE, we will be learning about the religion of Hinduism. We will use our key question, ‘Is there one journey or many?’ to learn about different life stages (Ashramas) within the life of a Hindu person. We will also learn about what Hindus believe about the cycle of Samsara, including birth, life, death and rebirth or Moksha.

In PSHCE, pupils will learn about the importance of looking after their mental and physical health. They will explore ways to support their emotional well-being, including managing stress, building positive relationships, getting enough sleep, staying active and talking to trusted adults when they need help. Pupils wills also learn about preventing illness through good hygiene, healthy lifestyle choices and understanding how everyday habits can affect their health.
