Year 2F

Welcome to Year 2!

This year, we'll be enjoying exciting stories, exploring numbers in new ways, asking big questions, and getting creative every day. Along the way, we'll be developing confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

We'll be sharing regular updates, photos, and classroom news here throughout the year, so be sure to check back to see what we've been learning and celebrating together. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

Autumn 1

In English, Year 2 will be reading and exploring instructions. We will identify key features, such as headings, numbered steps, time-order words and imperative verbs, before using these features to write our own clear instructions.

We will also enjoy a range of traditional tales and tales with a twist. We will explore the language and features used, compare similarities and differences, and use what we have learned to plan and write our own imaginative stories.

As Mathematicians, we will learn to count numbers up to 100 using concrete objects. We will explore place value and understand that each digit in a number has its own value. We will also compare numbers using our knowledge of tens and ones.

As Scientists, we will investigate what plants need to grow and stay healthy. We will observe how seeds and bulbs develop into mature plants and explore how water, light and a suitable temperature help plants to thrive. As part of our STEMterprise project, we will grow some of the ingredients needed to make our own pizzas, applying our scientific knowledge in a real-life context.

In R.E., we will explore the questions, ‘How do we respond to things that really matter?’ and ‘What do special stories teach worshippers and others?’ We will think about how we can care for our world by looking after natural resources and being responsible citizens. We will learn about the Christian story of Creation and discover how Christians celebrate Harvest Festival to give thanks for the food and resources we have.

As Geographers, we will explore maps to find the Equator, the North Pole and the South Pole. We will learn where hot and cold places are found around the world and use our map skills to explain why they are located closer to, or further from, the Equator.

As Artists, we will look at the work of Barbara Hepworth and talk about what is the same and what is different about their creations. We will use her ideas to inspire our own artwork. We will also create 3D models and sculptures using recycled materials and materials that we can bend, squash and shape!

As Global Citizens, we will learn why rules are important and how they help to keep us safe. We will explore what makes a good friend, learn ways to solve disagreements, and know who to ask for help if we are feeling unhappy. We will learn about different types of families, recognising how families can be similar and different. We will also discover the responsibilities people have within families and understand that it is important to share our worries with a trusted adult if something is upsetting us.
