Tom wiped his sweaty hands on his trousers and looked up at the tall rock face. It stretched high above him like a giant wall. His heart thumped loudly in his chest.
“Ready?” called his instructor from below.
Tom took a deep breath and reached for the first hold. The rock felt rough under his fingers. Slowly, he pulled himself up, searching carefully for the next place to put his foot. A cool breeze brushed his face as he climbed higher.
Halfway up, Tom paused and looked down. The ground seemed very far away now. For a moment his stomach twisted with nerves. But then he remembered all the practice he had done.
“I can do this,” he whispered to himself.
With steady hands and careful steps, Tom climbed the final few metres. When he finally reached the top, a huge grin spread across his face. The view from above made every step worth it.
