LC: How do Jewish people show respect for the Torah?

Starter Activity

Why do people look after things that are precious or meaningful?
When something is special to us, we do not throw it around, damage it or treat it carelessly. We usually keep it safe, handle it gently and show that it matters to us through our actions.
Discuss these questions with you talk partner:
Why should we look after something that is special?
How would you feel if someone damaged something important to you?
What actions show that we respect an object or a belief?
Jewish people show respect for the Torah in careful and meaningful ways because it is extremely important in Judaism.
Watch the clip which explains the importance of the Torah scroll and make notes.
The Torah is the Jewish holy text and contains teachings, laws and guidance that are very important to Jewish people. In a synagogue, the Torah scroll is kept safely inside a special cupboard called the Ark. It is not treated like an ordinary book because Jewish people believe it contains God’s words and guidance.
Jewish people show respect for the Torah in many ways. The Torah is often covered with a beautiful mantle and decorated with special ornaments. When the Torah is carried in the synagogue, people may stand to show respect. The writing on the scroll is not touched with fingers, because it is sacred and could be damaged. Instead, a special pointer called a Yad is used to follow the words while reading.
These actions help Jewish people remember that the Torah is holy and should be treated with care. They also show that respect is not only something people say; it is something people show through their behaviour.

Main task
'Respecting the Torah' Poster
Create a poster called “Respecting the Torah”. The poster should explain what the Torah is and why it is important to Jewish people. Then describe at least four ways Jewish people show respect for the Torah. For example, the Torah being kept in the Ark, covered with a mantle, read using a Yad, carried carefully, or not touched with fingers.
Try to include full sentences rather than single words. At the end of the poster, include one sentence explaining why it is important to show respect for something that is precious or holy.
Below are some designs to inspire you for your drawings for your posters.
