LC: To understand how Ancient Greek ideas and inventions have influenced life today?
Look at the four images below. Can you make a connection between them?
What do these four pictures have in common?
Can you relate them back to the same thing?

All four have connections to Ancient Greece. Can you work out how?
Today we are going to investigate how ideas from thousands of years ago have influenced our lives today.
Influence means that something from the past has helped shape or change something that came later.

The Ancient Greeks were the first group to create the voting system. They were the first group to create a democracy. A democracy is citizens taking part in making decisions about their city. However, women were not allowed to vote.
How might this idea have influenced the way some countries make decisions today? Do some countries still use this idea?

The Ancient Greeks held athletic competitions at Olympia. The Olympic Games began in 776 BC and continued for more than 1,000 years.
Can you remember why they used to play the Olympic games? What games did they used to play in the Olympics? What games do we still play in the Olympics today?

Theatre was a huge part of Ancient Greek culture. The Ancient Greeks performed tragedies and comedies in large theatres, often built in a semi-circle. Actors often used to wear masks on their faces to help them get in character.

Greek architects developed styles of columns and buildings that have influenced architecture for thousands of years. Buildings with columns are still built around the world today.
By creating pillars and columns into the buildings, what does it make the building look like? What effect does it have?
Task
With your partner, can you identify if these events are from Ancient Greek period, from the world today or from both periods of time (Ancient Greek and the world today).

Task 2
In your History books, write a paragraph explaining the influence of Ancient Greek ideas on the world today? Think about what is similar and what is different.
You might start your paragraph with
Ancient Greek ideas have influenced our world today because in the Ancient Greek period, they invented / they started ................................................. This is similar to what happens in the world today because we also have ....................................
