Word to Sentence Spellers

Write a sentence on your whiteboard for each word as I read them to you. Your sentence should show that you understand the meaning of the word. Do not just write a definition.

Learning

Focus: Create diminutives using the prefix mini-, e.g. miniature.

Can you remember what a  prefix is?

(a group of letters placed before a root which changes the meaning).

Read the following words with me and clap the syllables:

minibus

mini-golf

minifigure

mini-egg

miniskirt

minivan

mini-break

Can you identify the prefix?

Now read the sentences below with me. Use the context of the sentences to investigate the meaning of the prefix mini- and discuss.

Perhaps the minibus will arrive early today.

I wanted a particular minifigure to complete my collection.

Our class trip to the mini-golf course was my favourite part of the week.

Mini- is a prefix that originates from the word 'miniature' which refers to something small in size.
