LC: To explain what  5K’s are and why are they important to Sikhs.

Once someone has made a commitment to being a Sikh, they become part of the community called the Khalsa. The Khalsa was established by the last human Guru  - Guru Gobind Singh. Khalsa means 'pure'.

Khalsa

As members of the Khalsa, Sikhs wear five special symbols. As all Sikhs wear the same things, it shows they are all together as members of the community and shows their identity. Each item has a special significance.

5KsSometimes these symbols are referred to as the 5Ks. Why do you think this is?

The 5Ks

Look at the meanings below. Which meaning matches which item?

  1. God has no end, no beginning and we are all connected to God.
  2. It’s good to be modest.
  3. Only fight to defend the weak.
  4. God gives us gifts, and we should accept them thankfully.
  5. Neat and tidy, clean and calm, that is how to come to God.

Task:

The five K's are called the 5K's because                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            .

All men and women show they are Sikh by:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   .

Helping Others by Giving

Today’s theme is helping others by giving.

Think about and share with you partner the last time you gave someone something. How did it make you feel? How did it make them feel?

When we hear the word “giving,” we often think about money or presents. But giving can mean much more than that. We can give our time, our attention, our encouragement, and our kindness.

A smile can be a gift. Listening carefully to someone can be a gift. Sharing what we have with someone who has less is also a gift.

In the Bible, Jesus praised people who gave generously, even when they did not have very much themselves. He taught that giving comes from the heart.

Sometimes we hold tightly onto what we have because we are worried there won’t be enough left for us. But generosity helps everyone. It reminds us that we are part of a community that cares for one another.

This week, think about one thing you can give to help someone else — your time, your patience, your encouragement, or your kindness.

Reflection:
Thank you for all that we have.
Help us to be generous and willing to share with others.
Teach us to give with kind and joyful hearts.
