Talk Partners

Talk to your talk partner and identify the hazards in the images.

Soon, Ivan began to feel cold. The wind whipped through the bare branches and his dangling legs became numb. Soon he knew the frost would be in his fingers. It would spread through his hands until he could no longer grip, and he would fall into that whirling mass of fur and fangs. “Go away!” he cried. “Oh go away and find something else to kill!” But the wolves gazed at him with their cruel eyes and their jaws seemed to grin. “They know,” sobbed Ivan. “They know that I am freezing. They’re waiting for me to fall.”

LC: To show understanding of tone, intonation and volume.

Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when we are speaking. When we are reading aloud a sentence that has been written down, we use the rise and fall of our voices to stress certain words so that the intended meaning of the sentence is clear.

Together we are going to practice reading the following sentences aloud and stress the word that is in bold. Notice how the meaning of the sentence changes because you are changing your intonation.

She isn’t flying to Spain tomorrow.

She isn’t flying to Spain tomorrow.

She isn’t flying to Spain tomorrow.

We are now going to look at the following sentences and think about what word we would stress to make the following meanings clear.

Here is an example:

Meaning: The temperature of the stew was incorrect.

“I wanted a bowl of hot beef stew!” the guest erupted.

Where do you think the stress should be in the following sentences?

The speaker is no longer enjoying their ice cream.

“I was enjoying my ice cream,” she began. 

Frida wants the speaker to repeat their most recently spoken words.

“What did you just say to me?” asked Frida.

Can you find out what word you would stress in the following sentences? Practice saying these aloud.

The speaker wants to emphasise the large number of things eaten.

We ate lots of cake and biscuits at the coffee morning.

The subject realised their error too late.

It was only then that I realised my biggest mistake.

Now look at the word that has been capitalised, practice stressing the word in the sentence with your talk partners.

‘I did NOT steal your necklace.’

'OUCH! stop poking me' shouted Ben.

'Can I go to the park PLEASE?' begged Sarah.

Perform your sentences to the rest of the class.

LC: To write a narrative based on The spider and the fly - using inverted commas.
