A tree: he must find a tree to climb. Wolves can outrun anything but they cannot climb trees. He stumbled on, looking wildly around him but the trees were all pines with smooth, icy trunks. The wolf-cries drew nearer. He looked back. Dim shapes moved in the dark beneath the trees. He plunged forward, gasping. They had seen him now. A few seconds more and they would be upon him. He glanced about and ploughed through the snow, the wolves at his heels. He leapt; his hands closed around the lowest branch and he swung his legs clear of the ground as the first wolf lunged in a flurry of snow.

R - Why should Ivan climb a tree?

I - How is Ivan feeling? How do you know?

C- Why has the author used shorter sentences in the passage. Take a look at the highlighted sentences in the passage.

Let's make a list of the things that we need to be sure of before we quiz.

The first one has been done for you:

1) Make sure that you have read the book fully

2)

3)

Today we are going to be reading a passage and retrieving the answers from the passage to get our answers.

LC: To describe the different ways the Pendle Witches have been represented and give reasons.

The twelve accused of being witches lived near Pendle Hill in Lancashire, and were charged with the murders of ten people by the use of witchcraft.

🧙‍♀️ How have the Pendle Witches been represented?

Evil and Scary

  • In the past, people were very afraid of witches. The Pendle Witches were shown as dangerous and working with the devil.

Reason: This was because people didn’t understand some illnesses or bad luck, so they blamed witches.

Victims

  • Today, many people believe the Pendle Witches were not really witches. They were people who were selected and treated unfairly.

Reason: People didn't like the people accused because they were poor. Some were old or different, so people picked on them.

In Stories and Books

  • They are sometimes shown in exciting or spooky stories.

Reason: Writers use the stories to entertain readers. They might change the story to make it more fun or scary.

Statues and Art

  • Some places near Pendle Hill have statues, signs, or art to remember them.

Reason: These places help people learn about the past and brings tourists to the area.

Statue of Alice Nutter near Pendle Hill. Alice was unusual amongst the accused in that she was wealthy, the widow of a tenant farmer. She made no statement either before or during her trial, except to enter her plea of not guilty to the charge of murder. She was hanged, along with nine others, at Lancaster in August 1612.

Activity 1

1. Talk partners will be given a representation (evil and scary, victims, in stories and books, in statues and art).

2. Together read and learn how they were represented and the reason why.

3. Your teacher will then put you and your talk partner into bigger groups (8 children in total) to share what you have learnt.
