Transition Day

9.15 - 10.00

In Year 2 we will be learning about traditional stories and fairy stories.

Traditional stories are old stories that have been passed down through families and communities for many years.

Fairy stories are a special type of traditional story that include magic, such as fairies, witches, giants, dragons, or magical objects.

What Traditional or Fairy stories do you already know?

Can you identify any of the stories or characters from these descriptions?

Let's listen to the story of the Billy Goats Gruff.

Talk to your partner.

Who are the characters in the story?

Where do the Billy Goats want to go? Why?

Who is trying to stop them?

Now you are going to draw a story map of the Billy Goats Gruff.

10.00 - 10.30

You did a fantastic job last week learning your 10 times table.

Work with your partner to find the answer to these questions.

Use the diennes on you table to help you.

Show your answer on you number fan when your teacher ask you to.

Time for you to check your times table knowledge.

10.30 - 11.00 Daily PE and Playtime

11.00 - 11.40

 What are homophones?

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. They also have different spellings.

/i/J_Fernandes/English/t-l-3607-homophones-powerpoint_ver_3.mp4

Read the words in the two lists below. Spot the homophone pairs and match them up!

Talk to your partner then write down your answers.

see     hair     blew     flour     bare     ate

hare     flower     eight     sea     bear     blue

Read these sentences with your partner and write down the correct homophone.

1. Last knight/night, I went for a walk in the moonlight.

2. Blue/Blew is my favourite colour.

3. I brush my hare/hair every day.

11.40 - 12.40 Lunchtime (11.40 in the hall)

                                      12.50 - 1.40 / 1.40 - 2.10

Materials are what objects are made from. Look around the room, can you identify and name any materials?

How to change the shape of a material?

Materials don't just have a fixed shape, they can change.

It's possible to change the shape of some materials by doing the following actions:

  • squash it

  • twist it

  • bend it

  • stretch it

Let's try these actions on a piece of plasticine.

Now we will use these actions to create one of the characters from The Billy Goats Gruff story.

You have had two transition days now into Year 2.

What do you think Year 2 will be like?
What are you excited about?
What are you wondering?
Talk to your partner.
What is one thing you are looking forward to?
What is one thing you are worried or wondering about?
Everyone feels differently about change, and that's perfectly okay. Some people feel excited, some feel nervous, and some feel both at the same time. There isn't a right or wrong way to feel about moving to Year 2.
Let's think about some of the things that children have said they might be worried about and what we can do to help.
Example
  • I'm worried I won't know what to do.
  • My teacher will help me and explain.
