To be able to order numbers to 10, and know which number is greater or is lesser in value.

Lets learn.
To help us out lets start by lining up the objects equally!
Lets use our number lines to help us order the numbers from smallest to biggest.
Activity 1
Lets go into our outdoor classroom and order number cubes from the smallest to the biggest.
Activity 2
  1. Give each child a number card.
  2. Ask children to work together to stand in the correct order from 0 to 10.
  3. Once ordered, ask questions such as:
    • Which number is greater: 4 or 7?
    • Which number is less: 9 or 6?
    • What number comes before 5?
    • What number comes after 8?

Today we are going to be scientists! Scientists ask questions and investigate to find answers.

Big Question

Are our feet bigger than our heads?

Ask the children:

  • Put your hands up if you think your foot is bigger than your head.
  • Put your hands up if you think your head is bigger than your foot.
  • How could we find out?

Explain:

"Scientists don't just guess. They test their ideas and collect evidence."

Discuss and Predict

Ask:

  • Is my hand the same size as my foot?
  • How could I find out?
  • Is my foot as long as my head?
  • What could I use to compare them?

Model making a prediction:

"I predict that my foot will be bigger than my head because..."

Children share their predictions with their talk partner.

Working Scientifically

Scientists can:

  • Ask questions.
  • Carry out simple tests.
  • Observe carefully.
  • Compare and measure.
  • Record what they find out.

Main Activity

You Will Need

  • 2 sheets of paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick (optional)
  • Recording sheet

Instructions

Step 1: Measure Your Head

With support from a partner or adult, wrap a strip of paper around your head.

Mark where the paper meets.

Cut the strip to that length.

Step 2: Measure Your Foot

Place your foot on a second piece of paper.

Draw around your foot carefully.

Cut out the foot shape.

Step 3: Compare

Place the head strip next to your foot template.

Ask:

  • Which is bigger?
  • Which is longer?
  • Were you surprised?

Step 4: Record

Children draw a picture or tick:

☐ My foot is bigger.
☐ My head is bigger.
☐ They are the same size.

Use a capital letter for the personal pronoun ‘I’

Read page 11 and 12 of Harry the Happy Mouse.

Can you do some more copy cat reading?

We are going to do some drama and pretend to be the frog.

'I am stuck on the log. I need help. I don't want to drown. I jumped up high and I am in the sky.'

You are going to help me write in this speech bubble.

We are going to write one of the sentences we said as the frog.

We need to remember to use a capital letter for the personal pronoun 'I'.

Now its your turn!
