The playground slowly emptied as the final bell rang, its sharp echo bouncing off the brick walls. Sam lingered near the school gate, pulling his coat closer as a cold wind brushed past him. Above, heavy grey clouds drifted across the sky, blocking out the sunlight. He watched the last few children disappear down the road, their laughter fading into the distance.

Sam shifted his bag on his shoulder and glanced back at the silent benches. Normally, he would be racing home, but today his feet felt rooted to the ground. A tight knot of worry twisted in his stomach, making it hard to breathe properly. He didn’t know exactly what was wrong, only that something about the afternoon felt uneasy and unfamiliar.

As the gate creaked open behind him, Sam took a deep breath and stepped forward, trying to shake the feeling that followed him all the way home.

R - What was the weather like as Sam waited by the school gate?

I - Why do you think Sam stayed behind instead of racing home as usual? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

C - Why has the author described the playground as “silent” and the clouds as “heavy grey”? What effect does this have on the reader?
