“Ella stood at the back of the line, pulling her sleeves over her hands. She kept glancing at the floor and didn’t say a word.”

  • “I notice she is at the back. She’s pulling her sleeves—maybe she’s nervous or shy.”

  • “The author doesn’t say she is shy, but I can infer it from her behaviour.”

“I think Ella feels ____ because the text says ____.”

ACTIVITY:

“Lina curled up in the corner of the library with her book. She didn’t look up when the other children came in. When someone dropped a pencil behind her, she jumped and held her book tighter. Her breathing became quicker as she pressed herself further into the corner.”

1. What can you infer about Lina’s personality?
(E.g., shy, nervous, confident?)

Use this sentence stem:
I think Lina is __________ because the text says ____________________________.

2. Why do you think Lina jumped when she heard the pencil drop?

3. What might Lina be thinking in this moment?
Use evidence from the text.
