Let's read the sentences below and use the context of the sentences to investigate the meaning of the prefix im-. Just like in-, the prefix im- can mean both 'not' and 'in'/'into'. On rare occasions, it can mean 'on'.
The impatient explorer asked the guide to hurry through the jungle.
It is immature to laugh when someone makes a mistake.
The teacher found it impossible to believe the girl's story.

What do you notice about the root word each time?
If a root word starts with m, p or b, the prefix in- becomes im-. The prefix im- is actually just a variation of the prefix in-. It changes mainly to make words easier to say and smoother to pronounce
