Review

Root Plus Suffix Equals

Listen to your teacher say a root word and a suffix. Write the new word in your book. Watch your teacher write the word, then check yours and correct if necessary.

Learning

Add the suffix -ation, e.g. exploration.

Read the following pairs of words with me and clap the syllables:

inform                 information

prepare               preparation

What is the suffix in the second word in each case? How is this suffix

different to the suffix from session 1

Like the suffix -tion, adding the suffix -ation turns verbs into nouns.

For some root words, the -ation suffix is added with no change to the root:

expect                       expectation

present                    presentation

When the root word ends in e, the e is dropped before the -ation suffix is added.

imagine                   imagination

invite                         invitation

Let's use the Sticky Word Strategy  Colourful Words to practise spelling the words:

transport                 transportation

prepare                     preparation

Practise

Use the same strategy for these words:

information

expectation

presentation

adoration

sensation

admiration

exploration

observation
