Year 6G
Welcome to Year 6! We are very excited for an important and memorable year together. Throughout the year, we will work hard in all areas of the curriculum, building on the skills the children have developed so far and encouraging them to reach their full potential.
This year will be packed with a wide range of learning experiences designed to inspire curiosity and enjoyment. From creative classroom projects to practical problem-solving activities, every child will have the chance to thrive. We are also looking forward to trips and visits that will help bring our learning to life and provide wonderful memories for the children.

Timetable
Autumn 1
English
In English, we will be reading our first class novel, The Nowhere Emporium. We will follow the writing sequence - creating interest, reading response and reading analysis, gathering content, planning, writing and presentation.
Maths
In our Maths lessons, we will be learning about the place value of digits within larger numbers. We will be reading and writing , comparing, ordering and rounding numbers to ten million.
Science
We will develop a clear understanding of how light travels in straight lines and how shadows are formed when objects block the light. The children will explain how the size and shape of shadows change depending on the position of the light source, and will use scientific vocabulary confidently to demonstrate their understanding.
In Science, will be learning about animals and their habitats. We will explore how living things are classified into groups based on their similarities and differences, and how scientists use keys to identify them.
We have been classifying different living things using classification keys.
We have been investigating flowering and non-flowering plants.
Geography
In our topic on biomes, we will learn that different parts of the world have unique climates, plants, and animals that are specially adapted to survive there. We will explain the importance of biomes in helping people, animals, and plants live, and why it’s important to protect them from threats like deforestation and climate change.
During Autumn 1, the children have been learning about Earth's biomes. They have investigated where these biomes are in relation to the Earth and researched their unique characteristics.

RE
Our key question for RE in Year 6 is, 'Is life like a journey?' We will revisit this question throughout the whole of Year 6. In Autumn 1, we will consider this question whilst learning about the religion of Hinduism.

Autumn 2
English
In the Autumn term 2, we will explore the world of biographies! We will learn how writers tell real-life stories through interesting facts, timelines, and personal details. We will discover the key features of biographies, such as introductions, chronological order, and inspiring achievements. We will develop our reading skills while learning about remarkable people who made a difference in history and today.
We have been gathering content for our independent biography about L.S.Lowry.
Maths
In our Maths lessons, we will be continuing to learn more about working with fractions by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing proper fractions by whole numbers. We will then move on to learn about decimal numbers and convert units of measure.
Long division including decimals.
Science
Whilst learning about evolution and Darwin’s theory, it will help us to understand how living things change over time. We will discover how animals and plants adapt to survive in their environments, and how humans share connections with other species. We will learn about natural selection and the amazing diversity of life on Earth.
We carried out an investigation to see how different beak sizes and shapes affected what they might able to pick up and eat. We based our investigation on Charles Darwin's study of the Galapagos finches.
History
In Year 6, we are learning about the Victorians and the Industrial Revolution. We will discover how new inventions, factories, and railways changed people’s lives. We will explore what life was like for children and families in the north west of England, and how this exciting time shaped the modern world we live in today.
The children in Year 6 have started the topic by looking how the Victorians fit into a chronological framework of other British monarchs around this time.

Year 6 went on a trip to Queen Street Mill in Harle Syke, Burnley, the only surviving steam powered cotton weaving mill in the world!

RE
In RE, we will continue to learn about 'journeys'. This half term we will be learning about Christianity and the different denominations of the Christian faith.
Art
In learning about the work of L.S. Lowry, we will explore how he painted scenes of everyday life in industrial England. We will study his unique “matchstick” figures, use of muted colours, and simple style. We will also create our own Lowry-inspired artwork, showing people, buildings, and movement in busy town scenes.
PSHCE
Spring 1
Maths
In Spring 1, we will be learning about measurement. We will learn about the different units of measure for length, volume and mass and learn how to convert them by using multiplication and division.
English
In English, we will be reading our new class novel, Wonder. We will enjoy reading the book alongside our writing tasks including discussion and debate, biography and a short narrative.
Science
In Spring 1, we will learning about electricity. We will research electrical circuits and symbols before constructing our own electrical circuits.
Geography
In Geography, we will be learning about different time zones around the Earth. We will learn the names of the imaginary lines that circle the Earth and how these are used to locate places on our planet.
