Year 5M

Welcome to our class pages. Here you will find information about your children's timetable and learning. 

We love to make learning exciting and interesting for your children. We work hard to support them on their learning journey and to keep the pupils safe at all times. 

The class teacher is Mrs Mistry. The Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) are Miss Mitchell and Miss Parvez

Weekly Timetable

 This half term, some of the  boys will continues to go swimming every Monday. These boys must bring a swimming kit in a bag with swim shorts, a towel and googles if needed. 

PE day is Wednesday so pupils should come to school in their PE kit. Children will have a daily PE session every day so much bring or wear shoes suitable for running. 

 

Autumn 1 

English

 Our study this half term will focus on the traditional writing of Legends. We will study a traditional story, 'The Legend of Gelert', and will write our own legend narrative using the structures and features of this traditional text.

We will then produce an information text booklet about the achievements and the significance of the Ancient Greeks that will link to our History learning. 

Maths

 As mathematicians, we will begin our Year 5 learning by exploring Place Value. We will review how to read and write numbers to 100,000 and then move on to compare 6 digit numbers using bar models. We will learn about number patterns and how to round numbers.

Science

 As scientists, we will learn about the effects of different forces and assess their impact in our lives. We  carry out experiments to discover the effects of these forces.

History

 As historians, our study this half term will focus on the Ancient Greek civilisation and their significant achievements that still impact us today.

RE

 Our unit of study this half term will focus on Christianity and God. We will explore the beliefs and values that Christians hold dear and see that living religious traditions they ascribe to. Our study will include a visit to a Christian church to explore the religious practices of Catholics.

PSHCE

In PSHCE this half term, we are looking at respectful relationships and will identify what makes a healthy and happy relationship. We will explore the relationships we have with our families and those who care for us.

Art

As artists, our work will link to the Ancient Greeks and our History unit. We will study ancient Greek art and design, producing our own version of this style using drawing, painting and digital imagery.

 Autumn 2

 

English

 In English this half term, we will begin by reading a fiction book, The Boy at the Back of the Class.  We will use this text to explore characters and investigate how the writer shows the thoughts and feelings of characters through their writing. The pupils will create their own recount text based on this book.

We will then study a series of non-fiction texts that discuss two points of view. The pupils will learn how to create arguments for and against a topic and use this learning to create their own discussion text using facts, emotive language and specialist vocabulary. 

Maths

 We will begin this half term by continuing our study of multiplication and explore different approaches to solving calculations like the column and the grid method. We will go on to explore dividing by a single digit using the Bus Stop Method. We will finish the term by learning about graphs and data sets and will focus on reading and creating our own graphs and tables. 

Science 

 In Science, we will continue to learn about different types of forces and will plan and carry out experiments to test hypotheses about friction, gears, levers and pulleys. 

 

Geography

 Our Geography study this term will focus on the fascinating region of South America. The pupils will explore the human  and physical characteristics of this area and will examine features of climate zones and their impact on the region. The children will finish this unit by comparing South America with other geographical regions, noting similarities and differences.

 

RE

 Islam is the focus of our study for this half term and we will explore where Muslims find guidance on how to live their lives. Pupils will investigate the teachings of the Quran, looking at the symbolism of this text and exploring why this holy text is so important to Muslims.

PSHCE

 The pupils will reflect on Caring Friendships this half term, exploring strategies to maintain good friendships and good mental health. We will return to the important issue of online safety and look at how we maintain respectful communication online and in real life.

Engineering

 In Engineering we will learn about the mechanics of flight and the pupils will construct their own glider, measuring and cutting materials to ensure an effective plane. The children will then test their glider to see how well it flies and use their engineering knowledge to make any adjustments to improve the design.
